Tarmal Steel has grown exponentially over the last three decades, from being a local trader in Mombasa into a regional manufacturing powerhouse, driven by our philosophy of innovation, ethics, and an uncompromising commitment to quality.
Our fully automated rolling, Tube, and Wire Mills combine cutting-edge technology with decades of experience to deliver precision, consistency, and affordability trusted by Builders across East Africa.
The journey of Tarmal, With just USD 400 in seed capital, the founders started their entrepreneurial path in 1986, guided by resilience, discipline, and an unwavering focus on customer needs. Through integrity-led business practices and a deep understanding of the construction market, Tarmal grew steadily — not by chasing scale, but by earning trust.
By 1997, the construction of the iconic SabaSaba branch in Mombasa marked a major milestone, establishing Tarmal as the largest hardware trading company in the region. This phase laid the foundation for what would become a transformative shift in the company’s future.
Tarmal Steel was founded in 1998 — three brothers driven by a shared belief that strong nations are built on trust, quality, and people-first values.
In 2007, Tarmal took a bold step forward by commissioning its own steel rolling mill, transitioning from trading to becoming a fully integrated steel manufacturer. This decision reflected the founders’ long-standing philosophy: listen to the customer, then upgrade technology, machinery, and capability to serve them better.
2021 marked a significant leap for Tarmal towards a greener manufacturing footprint. By heavily investing in solar energy and with plans to expand capacity, we commit ourselves towards bettering our community and the sustainability of our industrial sector.
Since then, Tarmal Steel has continued to expand its manufacturing capacity, product portfolio, and technical expertise — investing consistently in modern machinery, quality systems, and people.
At the heart of this journey is the founders’ shared vision:
Tarmal Steel is for the people, by the people — built to support the growth of a greater nation.
Guided by the Tarmal Philosophy, we are continuously investing in our capabilities to provide the people with better products and to achieve our vision of forging a stronger nation.
